Are You a Soul Food Junkie?

Don't miss our next film screening!

Join us for the screening of Soul Food Junkies by filmmaker Byron Hurt followed by our community discussion with wellness and lifestyle consultant Cheyenne English and Chef Ryan Douglas, executive chef for the Riverside Unified School District.

When:   Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 @ 2:00 p.m.
Where:  Riverside Public Library
3581 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside, CA  92501

Light refreshments will be served.

In Soul Food Junkies filmmaker Byron Hurt sets out on a historical and culinary journey to learn more about the soul food tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. Hurt's exploration was inspired by his father's lifelong love affair with the high-fat, calorie-rich traditional soul food diet and his unwillingness to give it up even in the face of a life-threatening health crisis. Hurt discovers that the relationship between African Americans and culinary dishes like ribs, grits, and fried chicken is culturally based, deep-rooted, complex, and often deadly.

Journalism & Technology Academy

Day 2

One of the most deadly distractions for teens behind the wheel are cell phones. One in four American teen drivers admit to texting while driving, and 40 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds say they have been in a car where a teen driver used a cell phone in a dangerous way. Teens participating in this summer’s Journalism and Technology Academy have something to say about these alarming statistics.

Today, the students crafted a script and shot scenes for a video PSA encouraging their peers to avoid texting while driving.

Journalism & Technology Academy

Day 1

Journalism & Technology Academy kicked off today at the Fontana Campus of Chaffey College.  Attending this summer's program are promising young writers from as far away as Victorville.

The program is open to middle and high school students in the Inland Empire.  The curriculum is designed to promote media literacy and includes modules on newspaper writing, media ethics and Internet safety.  Participating students are groomed to become staff writers for Face 2 Face, a bi-monthly magazine published by OneNation Media Services.  Journalism & Technology Academy is made possible thanks to the financial support of Transcendence, a local nonprofit organization that provides financial support to other community based organizations with similar objectives. In addition, Chaffey College is making available a computer lab where students are conducting online research and completing their written projects while class is in session.

See the Film ... Join the Conversation

Many thanks to our guest panelists, A. Majadi, president/CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino and Alton Garrett, senior advisor to U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, for their comments on tonight's Community Cinema screening of More than a Month by filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman.  The film chronicled Tilghman as he set off on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month.  His thoughtful, humours journey through a so-called "post-racial" America explores the complexity and contradictions of relegating an entire group's history to one month.

This was an interesting and thought-provoking film that was followed by great audience participation and robust dialogue. This is exactly the goal of Community Cinema - to engage the community in meaningful dialogue and discussion! What a wonderful world this would be if we simply talked more to one another.

OneNation Media Services Announces Free ITVS Community Cinema Events Coming to San Bernardino
Presenting PBS Films

Local Collaboration Brings Students, Faculty and Community Together

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF.   – (Jan. 23, 2012) – OneNation Media Services, Inc., a local nonprofit organization, in collaboration with San Bernardino Valley College, will launch Community Cinema, a series of free monthly film screenings from the Emmy Award-winning PBS series, Independent Lens, on Tuesday, January 24, 2012.

The Independent Television Service (ITVS) is publically funded and brings independently produced, high-quality public broadcast and new media programs to local, national and international audiences.

OneNation Media Services and San Bernardino Valley College, in association with KVCR’s partner station, PBS SoCal, are among just over 100 groups nationwide selected to bring the groundbreaking film series to the public as an education and civic engagement initiative.

All of the Tuesday evening presentations will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Library Viewing Room on the campus of San Bernardino Valley College located at 701 South Mount Vernon Avenue. A moderated discussion will follow each screening.

The goal of Community Cinema is to bring together leading organizations, community members, and public television stations for learning and discussion, and to promote involvement in today’s critical social issues.
The 2012 schedule begins with DAISY BATES: FIRST LADY OF LITTLE ROCK screening on January 24. It tells the story of Daisy Bates, a complex, unconventional, and largely forgotten heroine of the civil rights movement who led the charge to desegregate the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.  It will be a great kick-off to Black History month.  The program will be moderated by faculty from San Bernardino Valley College.
